Electro-acupuncture is the application of pulsating electrical current through the needles as a means of stimulating the acupuncture points. It was developed in China around 1934, as an extension of hand manipulation of the needles.
What are the benefits of using Electro-Acupuncture?
- It acts as a stand in for prolonged hand manipulation. It can sometimes reduce the treatment time because of continuous stimulus provided by the machine. In some practices, electro-acupuncture allows the practitioner to attend to multiple patients at the same time.
- It is much easier to control the frequency and the amount of the stimulus with Electro-acupuncture than with hand manipulation of the needles.
- It can produce a stronger stimulation (if necessary) without causing the tissue damage that is sometimes associated with twirling and lifting and thrusting the needle done by hand.
- The types of diseases that benefit the most from Electro-acupuncture are neurological, chronic pain, spasm, and paralysis.
